In brief
The Evo Hybrid is Varia's small portable grinder with two ways to drive the burrs. You can use the hand crank, or fit the motor head, which runs from a USB-C rechargeable battery.
Independent reviews of the Evo Hybrid are scarce. Most of what follows is from the retailers Whole Latte Love and Bean Bros, and a Specialty Coffee Association expo entry that carries Varia's own claims. Honest Coffee Guide supplies grind-size data. Treat the performance statements as the sellers' claims unless a source is named as an outside tester.
Bean Bros labels its listing "GEN 1", so a newer revision may exist.
What it does well
- Whole Latte Love says you can choose between grinding by hand or the 80 RPM motor head
- 140 steps at 10 microns each, per Whole Latte Love
- Auto-stop after 10 seconds with no beans, plus over-torque protection, per Whole Latte Love
- The magnetic grounds cup fits a 58 mm portafilter basket, per Whole Latte Love
Where it falls short
- Whole Latte Love says it is 'made for precision, not speed'
- Bean Bros quotes about 70 seconds for 20 g of espresso grind with the motor
- Honest Coffee Guide's chart tops out around 830 microns, short of a French press range
- Independent test data is scarce; the listings call the burr Supernova in some places and Hypernova in others

What it does well
It is two grinders in one. Whole Latte Love says the grinder lets you choose between grinding by hand or using the 80 RPM motor head. Bean Bros adds that the manual crank handles ultra-fine espresso grinds.
The adjustment is fine. Whole Latte Love describes a 38 mm stainless steel burr set derived from the Varia VS3, with 140 grind steps of 10 microns each. Honest Coffee Guide lists a range of roughly 130 to 830 microns.
The motor has safeguards. Whole Latte Love says an auto-stop function cuts the motor after 10 seconds with no beans in the chamber, and over-torque protection shuts it down if overworked.
It is built to travel. Whole Latte Love says it is machined from aluminum alloy and stainless steel to a 0.02 mm tolerance, and comes with a shockproof carry case and cleaning brush. Bean Bros gives its size as 218.7 mm tall by 64 mm across.
The cup is practical for espresso. Whole Latte Love says the magnetic grounds cup drops into a standard 58 mm portafilter basket.
Where it falls short
Speed is the cost of the small motor. Whole Latte Love says the EVO is "made for precision, not speed," and recommends it to a buyer "for whom grinding speed is not paramount." Bean Bros quotes about 70 seconds for 20 g at an espresso setting and 45 seconds at a filter setting, with the motor.
The coarse end is short. Honest Coffee Guide's range stops around 830 microns, which is why BrewMark does not list French press or cold brew as its jobs, even though Whole Latte Love's copy says it can grind "from espresso to cold brew."
Capacity is small. The chamber holds up to 35 g of beans, per Whole Latte Love, enough for about two cups.
The paper trail is messy. Whole Latte Love calls the burr "Supernova," the SCA entry says "Hypernova," and Bean Bros uses both names. No independent source here measured grind consistency, battery life or retention.
Who should buy it, and who shouldn't
Buy it if you want a travel-friendly grinder that can go motorised at home and hand-cranked on the road, and you brew espresso, AeroPress or small-batch pour-over. Whole Latte Love pitches it at a budget buyer who does not mind a slow grind.
Skip it if you grind for several cups every morning or brew French press. A mains-powered single-dose grinder will be quicker, and a larger hand grinder will give a wider coarse range.
How it compares
The Varia Hand Grinder is the same body and 38 mm burrs without the motor. Whole Latte Love gives the hand version's weight as 2.2 lb. Pick it if you will never use the motor.
The KINGrinder K6 is a hand-only grinder with an external dial. It has no motor, so it suits you only if you will crank every time.
The Turin DF54 is mains powered with 54 mm flat burrs, and Coffee Blog's DF54 review measured about 12 seconds for 18 g. It cannot travel the way the Evo can.
Owning it
Charge the battery over USB-C, and keep the hand crank in the case as a backup. Whole Latte Love includes a one-year parts-and-labor warranty.
Whole Latte Love says the grinding chamber is easy to access on the hand version of this grinder. Our guide to cleaning a hand grinder covers the routine, and the calibration guide explains the zero point if you reassemble the burrs.
