How aeropress works

Short steep, then pressure pushes the water through paper. The combination gives you immersion consistency with pour-over clarity, which is why it survives travel and bad kettles so well.

Because contact time is short, the AeroPress works finer than most immersion methods. The tolerance is wide — anywhere from espresso-adjacent to filter can produce something good, depending on how long you steep.

Lower water temperature is a real tool here. Many published recipes sit well below boiling, which reduces bitterness without needing a coarser grind.

When it tastes wrong

Sour or thin

Grind finer, steep longer, or raise the water temperature.

Bitter or harsh

Grind coarser, shorten the steep, or drop the temperature toward 175°F.

The common mistake

Treating the plunge as the extraction. It is not — the steep does the work. Press slowly and steadily; forcing it changes very little except how much sediment you get.
