In brief

The Monolith Flat Max is a single-dose espresso grinder designed and made by Kafatek in Bellevue, in the US. It pairs 98 mm blind Shuriken flat burrs with a conical pre-crusher, so beans are broken up before the final grind. Kafatek pitches it at "the light-roast explorer."

It is sold made to order. The current version, which Kafatek's shop calls the MAX3, takes a non-refundable deposit for a January 2027 production batch. The balance is invoiced before shipment, and colour options cost extra.

The trade-off is precision and burr size against cost, waiting and a narrow focus. It is built for clear, high-extraction espresso from light roasts.

What it does well

  • Kafatek inspects every burr carrier for flatness within 5 microns
  • Two-stage grinding: a conical pre-crusher feeds the 98 mm flat burrs
  • Kafatek says the chamber can be cleaned without losing your setting
  • Each grinder is espresso-tested and ships with an extraction report

Where it falls short

  • Made to order in batches, with a non-refundable deposit
  • Kafatek designs it for light roasts and steers darker roasts elsewhere
  • A Reddit MAX3 owner reports grounds sticking in the hopper and chute
  • Espresso Outlet says a separate filter grinder may make more sense

What it does well

Alignment is the core of the design. Kafatek says the grinder is designed and made in Bellevue, and that every burr carrier is inspected for flatness within 5 microns.

The burrs are unusual. Kafatek's blind Shuriken burrs have no mounting holes on the grinding face. With the pre-crusher, that gives a two-stage design that Kafatek says is "made for extracting the detail in light-roasted espresso."

It is built to last. Kafatek rates the brushless motor for 40,000 hours and uses SKF bearings. Speed is variable from 22 to 400 rpm, and adjustment is stepless with no lock to release.

Owners rate it highly for espresso. A Reddit MAX3 owner who also has an EG-1 says it "may be the best espresso grinder I have ever had." Each grinder is also espresso-tested before shipping, and Kafatek includes the test report.

Where it falls short

You cannot buy one today and use it next week. Espresso Outlet notes that Kafatek sells in limited made-to-order batches with deposits, and that parts can involve lead times too.

It is tuned for one style. Kafatek says the Max is designed around light roasts and points medium and dark roast drinkers to its Conical or SDRM models instead. Espresso Outlet adds that a separate filter grinder may make more sense for filter coffee.

Workflow is not perfect. A Reddit owner of the MAX3 reports grounds sticking in the hopper lip and fines collecting in the exit chute. Kafatek ships a WDT tool, a puffer, an RDT spray bottle and a 58 mm dosing funnel to help.

Version history is confusing. Espresso Outlet warns that the MAX and MAX2 "are not automatically identical to MAX3," so older reviews, such as the 2018 Home-Barista launch thread, may not describe the current grinder.

Who should buy it, and who shouldn't

Buy it if you single-dose light-roast espresso, care about alignment, and are happy to wait for a batch. It suits a buyer who wants large flat burrs in a home-sized body.

Skip it if you drink medium or dark roasts with milk, or mainly brew pour-over. Skip it too if you want a hopper or quick delivery. Espresso Outlet suggests Turin or Moshi for "large-burr performance with easier acquisition and service."

How it compares

The Mahlkönig EK43 has the same burr size but is a tall café grinder with a hopper. The 2018 Home-Barista thread introduced the Max for people who would consider an EK43 at home.

Kafatek's own Monolith Conical targets body and texture with darker roasts. The Turin DF83 V2 is the easier-to-buy large flat-burr option.

For a smaller single-dose flat burr, look at the DF64 Gen 2. The grinder finder lists other espresso grinders.

Owning it

Day-to-day cleaning is simple. Kafatek says the grinding chamber can be cleaned without losing your grind setting. The short exit chute and its "Thwacker" help clear grounds between doses.

For a deeper clean, see how to clean a burr grinder.

Replacement Shuriken burrs are sold by Kafatek as a made-to-order part. After a swap, follow how to replace grinder burrs and recheck your burr alignment.

Kafatek gives a 12-month warranty for non-commercial use. Its extraction report is a starting point, not a target. BrewMark does not publish settings for the Flat Max, because the dial and thread pitch differ between versions; its settings page explains how owners dial in from their own zero point.
