In brief

The Monolith Conical is a single-dose espresso grinder of Kafatek's own design, from Bellevue, in the US. A 71 mm pancake burr breaks the beans first, then a 71 mm Shurikone conical burr finishes the grind. Kafatek pitches it at "the satisfaction of a full-bodied shot."

The current version is sold made to order. Kafatek's shop calls it the Monolith 71mm Titan Conical and takes a non-refundable deposit for a January 2027 batch. The balance is invoiced before shipment, and colour options cost extra.

The trade-off is body and build quality against cost, waiting and a narrow role. Kafatek built it for medium and dark roast espresso, not filter.

What it does well

  • Two grinding stages, finishing on Kafatek's own Shurikone conical burr
  • Compact base of 20.4 × 15.3 cm, per Kafatek
  • Espresso Outlet calls it the clearest choice for body and texture
  • Espresso Vivace found an earlier version whisper quiet, with thick shots

Where it falls short

  • Made to order in batches, with a non-refundable deposit
  • Espresso Outlet says it is not a casual all-purpose grinder
  • Espresso Vivace measured about 4 g held in the chute on an older unit
  • Single-dose only, so each drink means weighing beans

What it does well

It is aimed at texture. Kafatek promises "a textured expression to medium- and dark-roasted espresso." Espresso Outlet calls it the "clearest traditional espresso choice for body and texture."

It is built to last. Kafatek rates the brushless motor for 40,000 hours and uses precision-aligned SKF bearings. Espresso Outlet says Kafatek conservatively rates burr life at around 771 kg, which is a very long time at home volumes.

Adjustment is simple. You rotate the funnel to change the grind, with stepless movement and no lock. The footprint is small for a grinder this heavy, at 20.4 × 15.3 cm.

Earlier versions earned strong reviews. Espresso Vivace reviewed an earlier 120 rpm Monolith with 71 mm conical burrs. It called the shots "very thick with full flavor" and the grinder "whisper quiet."

Where it falls short

You have to wait. Espresso Outlet notes that Kafatek sells in limited made-to-order batches with deposits. Parts can also involve lead times.

It is a specialist. Espresso Outlet says it is espresso-focused and "not a casual all-purpose grinder," and suggests a separate filter grinder for filter coffee. Kafatek recommends the Conical for medium and dark roasts, and labels its Flat MAX for "clarity & extraction."

Retention depends on the version. Espresso Vivace's older unit held about 4 g in the chute, purged each morning by running the motor. Kafatek says the current short exit chute and its "Thwacker" help clear grounds between doses.

Model names are confusing on the used market. Espresso Outlet lists older MC3 and MC4 units alongside the current Titan, also called MC6. Kafatek still sells a Monolith Conical v4 Classic with Mazzer burrs and a single 110 rpm speed.

Who should buy it, and who shouldn't

Buy it if you single-dose medium or dark roasts and want a heavy, simple grinder that will last. It suits a buyer who values body over the clarity Kafatek targets with its Flat Max.

Skip it if you brew pour-over or light-roast espresso most of the time. Skip it too if you need a grinder soon or want to grind from a hopper. Espresso Outlet calls Turin's DF83V and DF64V and the Moshi C83 more practical for most buyers, and points hopper users to commercial on-demand grinders.

How it compares

Kafatek's own Monolith Flat Max uses 98 mm flat burrs, and Kafatek pitches it on clarity and extraction rather than body. Choose by roast level first.

The Niche Zero is the best-known single-dose conical grinder and is much easier to buy. The DF64 Gen 2 is a single-dose flat-burr option that is easy to buy.

If you are weighing it against a café grinder, the Mahlkönig EK43 is the usual reference. The grinder finder lists other espresso grinders.

Owning it

Daily upkeep is light. Kafatek says the chamber can be cleaned without losing your grind setting, and ships a WDT tool, RDT spray bottle, dosing funnel and puffer. For a deeper clean, see how to clean a burr grinder.

Kafatek sells Shurikone replacement burrs as a made-to-order part. Espresso Outlet notes some older MC3 and MC4 units accept Shurikone upgrades. After a swap, follow how to replace grinder burrs.

Kafatek gives a 12-month warranty for non-commercial use. Each grinder is espresso-tested with a report, which Kafatek calls a starting point. BrewMark does not publish settings for the Monolith Conical, because its unmarked collar does not read the same from one unit to the next; its settings page explains how owners dial in from their own zero point.
