The same number means different things
Both grinders use a clicks, which makes it tempting to copy a number straight across. Setting 18 clicks sits at grind index 0 on the JX-Pro but 40 on the Chestnut S3 — far enough apart to change the cup.

Dialing in the JX-Pro
External adjustment makes this the easiest hand grinder to actually dial, because you can count clicks without disassembling anything. Its filter range is generous, which is a mixed blessing — small click changes do less than you expect at the coarse end and more than you expect near espresso. Move in larger jumps for French press, single clicks for anything under filter.
Dialing in the Chestnut S3
Sits above the C-series with better burrs and a more solid feel. Its useful range genuinely extends further toward espresso than the C3, though a dedicated espresso grinder will still out-resolve it.
